'Ahead of the curve in the evolution of human feet'

From Nature journal - NEWS AND VIEWS  26 FEBRUARY 2020

"The longitudinal arch has long been considered a crucial structure that provides stiffness to the human foot. Now the transverse arch is stepping into the spotlight, with a proposed central role in the evolution of human foot stiffness."

Function of the patella

The patella facilitates the extension movement of the knee by providing a fulcrum for the patella tendon to act over.

'Life Secrets of the Amatsu Tatara' Taikai - Postponed due to Coronavirus

I have been asked to teach a Taikai in the South of France during, or just after the summer of this year (2020).

The Taikai be open to all Bujinkan members and will focus on the wider aspects of Amatsu Tatara treatment and philosopy as found in the documents and teachings that I have received from Hatsumi Sensei (including those found in the 'Life Secrets of the Amatsu Tatara' book).

Given the interest that the book has generated, this will be a great opportunity to bring people together and explore these little know aspects of the Bujinkan.

More details to follow..........

Why did Takamatsu Sensei rewrite the Amatsu Tatara?

I was asked why Takamatsu re-wrote the Amatsu Tatara Hisshin Ginkōroku (天津鞴韜謐心誾諕録) Shinshin Shingan no maki ('god's mind / heart and god's eyes' - 神心神眼の巻) documents / scrolls

My feeling is that firstly, as with many languages, the arcane forms of language need to be updated, so that contemporary and future generations can understand them. Otherwise, there is no transmission of knowledge.

Even Takamatsu Sensei's writing from 70 years ago had to be transcribed into a more current version of Japanese, so that it could be translated into English.

Secondly, and in addition, Takamatsu Sensei had the opportunity to update older concept of illness and their symptoms to bring them into line with modern pathological concepts and descriptions. This together with an understanding of anatomy & physiology would have added additional dimensions to the documents and allowed some cross communication with other medical approaches. It is fortunate because without such updates the knowledge contained within these documents would not have remain relevant into the future.

We can sometimes forget that living traditions need to retain effectiveness and that is the responsibility of the lineage holder. Without such updating, a tradition become an anachronism.

The Japanese character for Ryū (流) suggests a flow, or current rather than a stagnation.

Denju Menkyo

Four years ago today, I was honoured to have received the 'Denju Menkyo' (伝授免許) transmission licence for the Amatsu Tatara Hisshin Ginkōroku (天津鞴韜謐心誾諕録) Shinshin Shingan no maki ('god's mind / heart and god's eyes' - 神心神眼の巻) documents / scrolls from Hatsumi Sensei.

These ancient documents are divided into four (4) separate books. They were inherited and then re-written by Takamatsu Sensei.

Further honoured, humbled and very grateful to have received a certificate / licence (Menkyo 免許) of initiation / transmission (Denju 伝授) of the Amatsu Tatara (天津 蹈鞴) Shinshin Shingan no maki (神心神眼の巻) from Hatsumi Sensei.

Welcome to our new website

With the successful launch of Life Secrets of the Amatsu Tatara it was time to update our website.

With new courses being booked both in the UK and internationally, it was important that students could easily access information on course dates and locations. I also wanted to be able to keep everyone up to date with news and professional developments at The British School of Japanese Traditional Medicine.

Over the next few months there will be more exciting developments to share with you all.
